The float was positioned approximately 50m above New Cross, London. The Scale Map shows the piece of land the float was positioned above at Goldsmiths, University of London.
occUPation
Undefined space is a rare occurrence in London. Having to constantly interact with space in a rigid and confined way, only leads to a monotony of life, that perpetuates even further definition as meaning and reason in every action is searched for.
As the population grows at an alarming rate, there will eventually be a point at which there is not room for everybody. There will need to be an acceptance that not everybody can own their own part of the world, unless the idea of ownership is changed, and the sorts of spaces which can be owned.
Through exploring alternative ways of occupation, this project aims to question which spaces are ownable, and how this affects our relation to our locale.
occUPation, has resulted in a capitalisation on the ownership of the sky, a grey area of ownership, which is now black and white. It is mine.
Land owners ownership of the sky above their property is not infinite. There is a point at which it is no longer theirs. However this is not a clear cut line, and varies from property to property. I aimed to occupy a space in which ownership is unclear, and therefore claim it for myself. It is now a part of the city which is mine, and within which I can feel I am able to have my effect felt. I now no longer live in a city in which a story is constantly being inflicted upon me, but one in which I can place my story upon too.
